China’s Ethylene and Polyethylene Market
The essential building block, ethylene, along with its co-products and derivatives constitute approximately 30% of the global chemical value chain. Ethylene cost curve has been historically impacted by the oil price where high price supports high margins but low oil price results in a flattened cost curve and a complex and competitive global market environment. Polyethylene is used in a wide range of applications including packaging, automotive, construction, footwear, and others and is suitable for multiple processing methods such as blow molding, injection molding, rotomolding, and extrusion. China has historically been a major driver of global PE demand. In 2015, as illustrated by the figure below, China was a significant importer of PE, while North America and the Middle East and Africa were net exporters. China has added significant ethylene and polyethylene capacity since and we expect global ethylene capacity additions to be driven by China by 2025.
